“Walking more than two hours every day to school has been discomfort situation to my whole life. Because of such distance normally I arrive at school being late and tired. I could not even concentrate well in my subjects and sometimes fall asleep during the class period. One day I was tempted to leave school.  Getting a bike will help me to reduce distance and to concentratemy studies. I am sure I will be punctual student in my class and study hard. My ambition is to become a Teacher.”  – Jesca John

Jesca John is a student from Shunga Secondary School. She lives in Kumuyange village in the North West part of Tanzania. Her parents died from AIDS. Jesca was one among many students who were at risk of dropping out from school because of the hardship she was facing in her life.   Jesca could not wait to express her deep appreciation when she received a bike from friends in USA.

The Anglican Church of Tanzania, Diocese of Kagera has celebrated its 25th anniversary since the diocese was inaugurated in August 1985. There were more than 1,000 people who attended the jubilee.  One of the remarkable events was to see the Muslim young people singing and praising God because Tumaini had made a tremendous difference in their lives by enabling them to attend school. Bishop Nigel Stock from St Edmundsbury  & Ipswich Diocese was among the guests  from the UK who attended the anniversary.
On that colorful  event Bishiop Aaron, Bishop of the Diocese of Kagera & Bishop Nigel were able to distribute the bikes to a number of students from different schools. It really was an amazing gift!
“God has seen these vulnerable students by using our friends from USA that now they have the bikes. These bikes will make life easier and will make them to study hard” said Bishop Aaron.
The Ngara District Commissioner, Mr. Nyakonji, was in attendance of the Ceremony of distributing the bikes. He was very much pleased to see students in his administrative areas receiving the bikes from friends in the USA. His speech to the students was that they must use these bikes to better their lives.

Tanzania is one of the 10 poorest countries in the world, and Kagera is an area the size of Northern Ireland. Travel is very difficult, and villages are isolated. It is one of the poorest regions in Tanzania, where life expectancy is only 43 years and HIV carriage is at approx 28%, meaning perhaps 1 in 3 mothers give birth to an HIV positive baby. A subsistence farmer will only earn in the region of £55 per year, with which to support 6-8 family members, and with so much disease and death, children often become the head of the family at a very young age.

Breaking the cycle of poverty

The Tumaini Fund helps families and children of all ages in many ways, including currently supporting approx 10,000 orphans with food and clothing, of which 3000 now attend Government Secondary School which only costs £35 per year, but most families can’t afford it (Only 7% of children currently attend).  Education is in most cases the only way for a child to break the cycle and escape a hand to mouth existence and a very bleak future.

This opportunity of education not only changes the children’s lives forever and pulls them out of the uncertainty and degradation of subsistence farming, but can help lift a whole family out of poverty!

Dr Susan Wilson and her team at The Tumaini Fund take no wages, travel at their own expense, and any vital equipment such as laptops are donated to ensure that all the money raised is spent in Kagera. They use 7 local workers in Kagera to carry out the project alongside 70 local parish-workers.

Tumaini Fund USA is now a Naples-based organization led by a dedicated Board of Directors with a mission to expand this charity in an effort to support all 200,000 orphans in the Kagera region of Tanzania.

Doug Burke, President of Tumaini Fund USA, states “Because we are a small organization and supported by local Anglican dioceses in Kagera, more than 97 percent of the funds collected go to the children and their communities. Those who manage our efforts on the ground in Africa are wonderful stewards of the funds we entrust to them. Hope for these deserving children is in the hands of the people of Naples and other communities all across the country”.

A new and colorful dress brings enormous joy to the orphan girls. Proudly wearing their new dresses, these girls are now eager to attend church and go to the market. It is especially meaningful to these girls to know that someone cared enough about them to sew it by hand.
